Australian Tamils Use Food to Connect Asylum Seekers with New Community

Australia-Tamil-Food-Asylum-Seekers

Headed by a team of Sri Lankan cooks, this series of dinner events is a new social food project aimed at raising awareness for Melbourne’s asylum-seeker community.

With the intention of sharing Sri Lankan culture with suburban Australia, the traditional vegetarian banquet of curries, chutneys, dahl, kormas and masalas brings the vibrancy and energy of Sri Lanka’s traditional heritage to the literal table. The feasts provide immediate part-time work for the newly settled migrants, and demonstrate the value of Tamil culture in Australia’s multicultural society.

The authentic Tamil cuisine connects settling asylum seekers with their new community, celebrating their food and heritage with a new community. All profits from the event go towards settling asylum seekers in their new homeland.
