Tamil is one of the longest surviving classical languages in the world. The global movement of Tamil communities has brought the language all over the world. While this is an opportunity to enrich global cultures with our beautiful language, we have also seen the use of the Tamil language on the decline. It is for this reason that Anto Gnanapragasam created Agaram Tamil Teacher, a mobile application designed to teach Tamil in a fun and interactive way.

Recently we announced the Tamil Literary Garden’s 2014 essay competition, inviting undergraduates and graduate students to submit an essay on the topic: “New Technologies: Refashioning a Tamil Identity.” Today we have the pleasure of sharing excerpts from the winning essay of the 2013 competition.
The Tamil Literary Garden invites undergraduates and graduate students to submit an essay on the topic: “New Technologies: Refashioning a Tamil Identity.” The last few decades have witnessed a burgeoning of new technologies making it possible to speak across spaces and to communities in ways that weren’t even fathomed in earlier time periods. Not only do new technologies provide access to a broad spectrum of people in a short span of time, they enable forms of creativity that did not exist before.
