Kamala Harris, the daughter of an Indian Tamil mother – Dr. Shyamala Gopalan, and an African American father – Professor Donald Harris, has been a popular name in the media in the last few days. The current attorney general of California was introduced by President Barack Obama as “… the best-looking attorney general” at a Democratic National Committee fundraising lunch in Atherton, Calif. This caused an outburst from some men and women who were appalled that the President would remark on Harris’ appearance in a public forum.
President Obama went on to apologize for his comments. Jay Carney, The White House press secretary, made the following statement:
“He fully recognizes the challenges women continue to face in the workplace and that they should not be judged based on appearance,” Carney said Friday. “They’re old friends. He certainly regretted that [his comments] caused a distraction.”
While some individuals felt that an apology was necessary and that Obama completely stepped out of line with his remark, others feel that it was an innocent and acceptable comment that has been blown out of proportion. What do you think? Let us know by commenting below.
